The US sought to join Europe in the goal of extending its territory in the late 1800s.  The Yellow Journalist, journalist who exaggerated or created stories, saw their chance to involve the US beyond its borders after the USS Maine exploded outside of Havana, Cuba.

US Involvement in WWI

Many Americans desired to stay isolated from the events and wars of Europe during the "Great War".    However, after the sinking of the Lusitania and other US vessels, the United States enter WWI.  With the infusion of American troops, the Allies were able to defeat the Germans and the other members of the Triple Alliance.
